Q

My Story

My name is Q, and I am graduating in May 2026 from Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development with a specialization in Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

The past four years at BU have been both transformative and rewarding. Throughout my time at Wheelock, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from passionate and thoughtful educators who have shaped my understanding of mental health, development, and the importance of early intervention.

With a strong interest in working directly with youth, I am drawn to roles where I can support children and adolescents in meaningful, empathetic ways. My goal is to become a school counselor or a personal therapist, creating safe and supportive environments for young people to grow, heal, and thrive.

My Background

I was 17 when I came to the US, with nothing but two suitcases, a student visa, and what I now realize was an incredible amount of courage for a teenager. I didn’t know exactly what I was getting myself into, but I was excited to find out.

Since then, I’ve learned how to navigate life in the U.S., both in and outside the classroom. I’ve figured out how to rent my first apartment, cook meals, how to drive, and even how to dealt with a hit-and-run incident.

Back in China, I left behind family—but in Boston, I’ve built a second one. At BU Wheelock, I found a real sense of belonging. I met lots of friends who share my passion for child development and mental health.

And then there’s my favorite support system—my two dogs.  Watching them reminds me daily that relationships—even complicated ones—are worth the effort.

All of these pieces have shaped who I am today: someone who values empathy, connection, and resilience. These are also the values I hope to bring into my future work in mental health.
